Year 6 Key Knowledge

• Mexico is in South America. Its capital city is Mexico City.
• There are 12 independent countries in South America. They are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. 
• The capital city of Russia is Moscow.
• A key physical feature of Russia is the Tundra.
• The United States if America is Washington DC it is made up of 50 states. Each state has a capital city.
• Liverpool docks is significant in World trade.
• The five most well-known rivers are the river Nile, the Amazon, the Mississippi, the Danube and the Volga.
• Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK, Snowden is the highest mountain in Wales and Scafell is the highest mountain in England.
• The Himalayas, The Andes, The Alps, The Rockies and The Urals are mountain significant mountain ranges across the world.
• Name the key elements of the water cycle.

Location Knowledge

• Name and locate Russia, USA and the main countries of South America including Brazil concentrating on environmental regions, main mountain ranges, rivers human and physical characteristics, and major cities.
• Name and locate Liverpool docks and the River Mersey identifying human and physical characteristic, economic activity and trade links.
• Distribution of natural resources.
• Types of settlement including trade links.
• Understand how the port of Liverpool has changed over time.
• Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, equator and northern/ southern hemispheres, The tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, The prime and Greenwich Meridian and time zones

Place Knowledge

• Understand geographical similarities and difference between the USA and Russia and Brazil in South America.
• Understand the human and physical geography of the Liverpool docks and the surrounding areas of the River Mersey and how it has changed over time.

Geographical Skills and Fieldwork (Hamilton Square and its links to Liverpool)

• To use maps, atlases, globes, aerial photographs to locate key features.
• Focus study of Hamilton Square including the town hall, the station, tunnels, Birkenhead Ferry and links to Liverpool.
• Use ordinance survey maps and six figure grid references.

Human and Physical Geography

• Climate zones, rivers, mountains, biomes and vegetation belts in Russia, USA and South American countries.
• Understand the water cycle.
• Economic activity including trade links.
• Distribution of natural resources.
• Types of settlement including trade links.

Geographical Skills and Fieldwork (Liverpool Docks and the River Mersey)

• To use maps, atlases, globes, aerial photographs to locate key features in the docks and surrounding areas of the River Mersey.
• Focus study of Liverpool Docks and the River Mersey.
• Use ordinance survey maps and six figure grid references.
• To use symbols and keys on ordinance survey maps.

Use field work to observe, record and present human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs and digital technologies.
