Welcome to Year 4! 

We are a happy, welcoming and nurturing year group where every child is encouraged to be kind, caring and respectful. Our Year 4 children work hard, support one another and take pride in everything they do. We love learning together, trying new things and celebrating each other’s achievements. We are looking forward to a wonderful year full of learning, laughter and exciting experiences!

Essential Class Routines 

📚 Reading Packs

Reading packs are sent home every Friday and should be returned to school on Monday. Children are encouraged to read as much as possible at home. They are also welcome to bring in reading materials they enjoy, such as comics, magazines, recipe books or biographies. Each day, children will have time to enjoy reading during our Reading for Pleasure time.

🏃 PE

PE is taught every Wednesday afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on this day.

✏️ Spellings

Spellings are set every Monday. Children will write their spellings down on Monday morning and bring them home to practise throughout the week. Our weekly spellings can also be found under the 'Spellings 2026/27' tab.

💧 Water & Snacks

Children should bring a water bottle to school every day. Children may also bring a healthy fruit or vegetable snack for break time.

🎒 Equipment

All essential stationery is provided in the classroom. Please do not send children into school with personal pencil cases or toys, unless specifically requested.

Learning Curriculum Topics

Our Curriculum Learning Topics for the Autumn Term are:

• English: Our two focus texts for the Autumn Term are Escape from Pompeii and The Firework Maker's Daughter. Throughout the term, children will explore a range of writing styles and purposes. They will develop their writing skills by using features such as fronted adverbials, conjunctions, expanded vocabulary and direct speech.

• Mathematics: During the Autumn Term, children will explore a range of mathematical topics, beginning with Place Value, followed by Addition and Subtraction, and then Multiplication and Division. Children will also continue to develop their fluency and quick recall of multiplication facts, with a particular focus on the 2, 4, 8, 3 and 6 times tables.

• Science: In Science, our Year 4 children will learn how living things can be grouped and classified according to their characteristics. They will also explore states of matter, investigating the properties of solids, liquids and gases and how materials can change from one state to another.

• Topic (History/Geography): In Autumn 1, our History topic is Roman Britain. We will be bringing our learning to life with a school trip to Chester, where children can explore the Roman history of the local area. In Autumn 2, we will move to Geography and learn all about rivers and the water cycle, developing children's understanding of key aspects of physical geography.

• Art/DT: In Autumn 1, children will explore colour theory, sketch landscapes and develop their own artistic ideas before creating a final piece inspired by Margaret Godfrey. In Autumn 2, children will develop their Design and Technology skills by designing and creating a money container using sewing techniques.
