Intent

At Our Lady and St. Edward’s we recognise the vital contribution of physical activity in pupils’ physical, cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the role it can play in a pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural development.

We aim to provide a broad and balanced P.E. curriculum and series of extracurricular activities to aid pupils’ increasing self-confidence and physical wellbeing. Through a balance of individual, paired and group activities, we aim to cater for the different strengths, needs and preferences of each pupil, using differentiated activities where appropriate. Through the variety of opportunities that PE and sport offer, pupils can develop a sense of personal achievement, fair play, teamwork and an understanding of the ways in which sport can remove social and cultural boundaries.

We plan a range of activities that aim to provide children with a broad base of movement knowledge, skills and understanding, which they can refine and expand throughout their primary school years. All pupils are encouraged to join after school clubs and extend their interest and involvement in sport.

We encourage pupils to develop their creative and expressive abilities, through improvisation and problem-solving. Pupils are taught to appreciate the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle, and begin to understand those factors which affect health and fitness.

Through the Government Funding for primary PE and Sport, the school will provide further opportunities for all children to develop their physical literacy. This will be through work with external agencies, specialists and staff development.

Impact

Pupils complete each key stage with high levels of skill, expertise, confidence and enjoyment in all aspects of PE. Pupils are aware of the links between physical activity,  good mental health and well-being. They recognise the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. After Covid we are now returning to our involvement with inter school competitions, tournaments and festivals which enrich PE and provide a wide range of opportunities for pupils. Through our high quality PE curriculum pupils are able to excel in a broad range of physical activities and develop the specific competencies for success in a range of sports. Sportsmanship is promoted across the curriculum with a focus on fairness, respect and tolerance which is at the heart of all activities for all pupils.
